Baba Museum Phuket
Baba Museum Phuket, a 105-year-old building at the intersection of Phuket Road and Phang Nga Road will house a heritage Baba Museum.
Located in the historic and culturally rich area of Phuket Town which is famous for Peranakan architecture, the undertaking is being headed up by the Thai Peranakan Association.
On display will be items, which have been donated by locals including apparel, furniture and art. Historical records will be given a special home for future generations.
The restoration process is currently underway in the Sino-Portuguese building and the organization is still sourcing public funding to complete the entire project.
The old Standard Chartered Bank, in Phuket Town, is to be refurbished and turned into a cultural museum to honor of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.
The empty bank building was also previously used as a police unit. Phuket City Mayor Somjai Suwansupana has said the building is over 100 years old. Due to its location on the side of the road the structure will need to be strengthened and improved. The utility systems will also need to be worked on.
When complete, the Sino-Portuguese building will be designated as the ‘Baba Museum Phuket Provincial’, The Phuket Peranakan Association are now looking for donations to help transform the building into a 50-million-baht cultural museum. It will also help support tourism in the old town area.
