How To Create Photography Energy?
I believe that every photographer knows about the line and shape theory to capture a beautiful photo. This also a part of the photography composition, is very important for the structure of a photo. But do you know how to create Photography Energy?
Have you ever thought that, what ingredient for a good photo composition? In this post I will not discuss about how to add-on emotion to a photo, maybe next, but let’s talk about the composition.
All subjects in a photo was displayed in two dimensions, not matter a car, a building or a man. That is not a real man in the photo itself, it represented by the line and turn it into the shape of a man. And, for sure the lighting makes a clear vision of the object. Only the photographer’s responsibility to decide what will show in there, control over that man looks like.
But only the subject is not enough to create energy and make the impact. So you need some diagonal leading line, leading the viewer to the subject. Like a finger point to somewhere to show people, that man not any other man. The diagonal leading line will tell the viewer look longer and deeper, give them a richer experience.
Diagonal leading line not necessarily is a straight line, can be curved line, but it not only horizon or vertical line.
Based on the laws of perspective, diagonal lines give energy to the frame. When the diagonal line leads to a vanishing point, they introduce depth of the image. You can put the subject at the vanishing point, and the lines leading diagonally all the way to the vanishing point to make the image depth.
Of course, you are the one who determines the place and where the line leading to. How much photography energy you put in the image, is based on your aesthetic sense. The wide-angle lens can make this perspective more outstanding, increase the visual momentum of diagonal line.
Diagonal Line is not only for the static object, it also can be some moving object. Like the wave marks, cloud track, light tail or maybe the water flow, only it can show as the leading viewer to the target.
In these photos I am using the ND (Neutral Density) filter to slow down the light go in the sensor. So I can slow down the shutter speed to make some cloud mark on the sky. ND1000 filter, 3.0 density, 10 stops. This filter can slow down 10 times the light goes through the sensors. If you take a photo with 1/2000s without ND1000 filter, and you can take it in 1/2s (1/2000 * 1000) with ND1000 filter.
In the human sense, we read from left to right, and the thing drop from top to bottom. Let’s say a car drive at a mountain slope, when this car driving uphill, in our brain will tell it will go a bit slow, right? But if it’s driving downhill, it will move faster.
I combine it. When we see the diagonal line from left top to right bottom, it will show going down to make more energy. Opposite that, if you see the line from left bottom to right top, you will feel that is going uphill, and that will go a bit slow. So the photography energy was created by this natural momentum.
Photography is art, that has not fixed the rules. I am here to tell you the possibility of the diagonal lines effect to your image, intentionally experiment is the only way to success. Think before pressing the shuttle. Ask yourself :”Where should you put the line? What do you want the image feel like?”. Answer the question and take a shot. I’m sure you will get a better experience, hope you like this post and happy photographing.
